After suffering their first defeat of the season last week against Drogheda, league champions Shelbourne aimed to bounce back against newly promoted Cork City. However, Tim Clancy’s side made it challenging for the hosts and grabbed a 1-1 draw at Tolka Park.

In the 3rd minute, Cork had the first chance of the game. A header from captain Charlie Lyons was brilliantly saved by goalie Conor Kearns. At the beginning, the Rebel Army played with great confidence and pressed their opponents early on. In contrast, Shelbourne needed some time to find their rhythm in the game.

The Reds also had their first opportunity from a set-piece. In the 19th minute, Ali Coote took a free kick from the left corner, hitting the side netting. Some fans initially believed the Scotsman had scored. Ten minutes later, a cross from Harry Wood reached Kerr McInroy, but his attempt was cleared by Tein Troost. Moments later, the Dutch goalkeeper was in form again, successfully saving a shot from Ali Coote.

However, Cork finished the first half on a high and created some dangerous situations in the Shelbourne box, including two chances by Kitt Nelson. During the first 45 minutes, the Munster side undoubtedly matched the champions on equal footing.

The second half began with excitement. Cork striker Ruairí Keating narrowly missed a cross from the left side. For Shels, a shot by substitute Ademipo Odubeko was saved by Troost. In the 51st minute, the visitors took the lead. Rio Shipston’s attempt was deflected, but Keating positioned himself perfectly in the goal area and struck the ball into the net.

Following this setback, Shelbourne increased the pressure and dominated the game. Sean Boyd nearly hit the net but his shot was saved on the goal line. Moments later, Evan Caffrey scored a well-deserved equaliser in the 70th minute with a beautiful volley from close range.

In the closing phase, the Reds were the stronger side and created several opportunities for a second goal. John Martin and McInroy came particularly close in the 82nd minute but were unable to convert. Meanwhile, the Leesiders missed one final counterattack in the 5th minute of extra time, led by Milan Mbeng and Harvey Skieters.

As a result, the teams concluded an entertaining evening at Tolka Park with a one-all draw.
