Ireland under-16 and Sligo Rovers defender, Aidan Gabbidon is set to sign for Swedish powerhouse, Malmo FF. The Rovers star will sign for one of Scandicvans best football academies when he turns 16 on the 23rd of January.

Gabbidon, who was a key member of the Ireland under-16 Victory Shield winning team in 2024, was given a chance to trial at Malmo in 2024 where he impressed so much that he was invited back to play for them in the Gothia Cup in July, playing a starring role in their tournament winning under-15 side.

Malmo is a 7 star rated academy and is regarded as the best footballing institution in Sweden. They are renowned for the production line of talent with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anel Ahmedhodžić and more recently Sebastian Nanasi coming through the academy. Their mission is to have half of the academy prospects in the first team and half of the academy prospects playing professional football by the age of 21.

The Swedish giants are also a consistent contender in the Uefa Youth League which will give Aidan a chance to test himself against some of Europe’s best in the under-19 age bracket.

Malmo FF is Sweden’s most successful club, consistently favorites to win the Allsvenskan (Swedish top flight) and regular participants in European competitions like the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. This winning culture and international exposure offer Aidan an ideal environment to grow as a player.

Once Gabbidon signs on the dotted lines as a Malmo player, he will be the first Irish player to represent “Di blåe.”
